Victorian C. 1850 Gold and Hairwork Floral Eternity Ring
This exceptional ring dates from the early Victorian period, circa 1850. Part of the tradition of sentimental mourning jewelry, it features finely braided brown hair carefully set within a gold band. This tradition of hairwork was extremely popular in the 19th century and could be used to commemorate a deceased love one or were exchanged within families or relationships as a memento of those far away.
While we may never know the exact circumstances of this piece, given the floral motif and possibly romantic inscription "A.M. & J.C." - this ring may be a sentimental memento between lovers. Exceptionally crafted with floral engraving surrounding the entire band in the eternity style and set in 15k yellow gold it is a fantastic piece of history.
